Christmas Interview with Mom O'Brien

Maude interviewed our Mom about Christmas:

What is your favourite thing about Christmas?
The sights, sounds, smells, tastes and the feelings - of love, peace, and family.

Share some Christmas traditions.
I love to decorate.  I try to get a Christmas fragrance candle.  I enjoy the paper lights I put up and putting up the nativity.  Christmas Eve supper with my family.  My favourite tradition, though, was taking each of my kids shopping individually to buy gifts for their siblings.

What was Christmas like with 10 kids?
It was fun and busy.  It was especially fun in a musical family.  There was always a lot of singing and caroling.  A lot of secrets - keeping gifts from each other until Christmas morning.  Some years the little ones made their gifts to give.  "I still have a t-shirt they designed!" (Maude)  Lots and lots of baking and cooking eating.  Bags and bags of groceries!

What is your favourite Christmas treat?
I love fudge and wassail but I think I'd have to say my sister's 7 Layer Cookies.

What was Christmas like for you as a kid?
That was a long time ago!  It seems like it always snowed.  It was an exciting time - my mother made it magical.  I believed in Santa - probably way too long actually!  I understood the real meaning of Christmas too though.  One year my mom and sister made aluminum bells and when the coal furnace blew the bells would tinkle - it sounded magical to me as a kid.  On December 20th, wrapped presents would appear on our sideboard that Mother had wrapped with the money my grandma had sent.  We would unwrap those presents when we celebrated with my grandma on Christmas Eve.  On Christmas morning we would wait upstairs until Daddy came in from milking the cows and then he would call for us to come down.  We always went to Midnight Mass and I really enjoyed when my older sisters were home with their husbands to celebrate with us.

Is there any other Christmas traditions or experiences that you want to mention?
Probably!  But it is hard to think of them right now!  I know one.  I always enjoyed when we would volunteer to ring the bell for the Salvation Army when you all were growing up.  That was such a nice thing to do each Christmas.
