Maude: What did you do for your New Year's celebration this year?
Esther: We were at Mom's. Hanging out at her house.
Lizzi: That is fun!
Watching the ball drop?
Maude: Did she have New Year's dip?
Esther: We ate new years dip and played games
Lizzi: Oh, I guess not since mom diesn't have cable this year.
Esther: We played "boggle" and "pass the pigs"
Maude: What is "boggle?"
Esther: It was just Mom and my two men and our one brother
such a small crowd!
Boggle is a fun word game
I am HORRIBLE at it (though I really enjoy it)
Lizzi: I love word games!!
Have you played scrabble slam?
Maude: Yes, that is fun. I like Scattergories
too
Lizzi: Me too! Scattergories is my all time favorite!
Esther: I love scrabble slam (another game I am HORRIBLE at) word games are not my thing
my husband is amazing at them
Maude: And the one where you read the crazy phrase and you have to figure out what it is really saying
What is that called?
Esther: Liz, you should play him some time. Maybe you could give him a run for his money
he ALWAYS beats me
Lizzi: haha! That'd be fun! Although I'm not as good as I wish I was
Esther: umm... taboo?
is that what you're thinking Maude?
Maude: Probably.
I am not certain but probably.
What about you Liz? How was your New Years?
Lizzi: We just got back from visiting my inlaws in Singapore, so we had New Years over there
It is not as big of a deal as the Chinese New Year, which is still a few weeks away
Maude: How do they celebrate it?
Lizzi: But we still enjoyed walking in the city. There was music.
Maude: But you missed being there for the Chinese New Year? Have you been there for that before?
Lizzi: And on New Years Day, my husband's family has a big family gathering at one of the aunt's houses
I haven't been there for Chinese New Year before.
I hope we can be someday
I'd love for our kids to experience that
Maude: Does your husband miss celebrating the Chinese New Year in Singapore?
Lizzi: I don't think he misses it that much. Well, maybe the good food
haha!
And they have family time during it, which is nice
But it is also filled with a customary visiting of friends and relatives so it gets pretty busy
Maude: Cool.
Lizzi: The kids and single people get ang pow (packets with money) which is pretty nice for them!
Esther: That would be neat to experience sometime
Lizzi: Our boys would like that! ha
Maude: My New Year's was pretty relaxing. Just me, my husband and the kids at home. We watched "It's A Wonderful Life," ate New Year's Dip and Spinach Artichoke dip and caramel corn. Played games with the kids and put them to bed late (about 10 pm) then stayed up until midnight eating cheese and talking. We toasted with Martinelli's Sparkling Cider at midnight then went to bed. Didn't get to see the ball drop because we don't have tv but it was fun!
Esther: That sounds really fun!
nice and relaxing
Maude: There are a couple of times a year that I miss tv... New Year's is one of them!
Esther: best way to welcome the new year in I think!
me too!
Lizzi: That sounds wonderful!
I feel the same way!
I miss it then and for thanksgiving parade
Maude: And Hallmark and ABC Family Christmas movies
Do you girls have a special New Year's Memory?
Lizzi: My favorite is probably the times we would go to our neighbor's house growing up
for a fun evening of games and the countdown
Maude: That was fun. They are a special family.
Esther: The first year after we were married was really fun. We just stayed home in our jammies all day. Played a TON of games (we looked up and learned all these new "two card games" online and still play some of them) It was just the two of us. We ate ice cream and other junky food. It is funny because we didn't know we would have a kid by next year and we LOVE our son but that is one of the few holidays we ever had (and probaly ever will) to get to spend just the two of us
so I think of it as special.
Maude: That's nice, Es!
Lizzi: That's really special!
Maude: For me it was in Germany. We were on a skiing holiday in the German Alps in Garmisch and the crazy Germans were shooting off fireworks in town.
Esther: So fun
Maude: I went on our balcony and the air was filled with smoke and fireworks were going off all over the place! Add drunk revelry with fireworks - it was something else!
Some were shooting sideways not straight up
Lizzi: I bet! haha
oh dear
Maude: It is the closest thing to bombs dropping tat I ever hope to hear!
But it was also such a celebratory experience. Our celebrations are never so close to the ground so it felt very intense and made you glad to be alive. As New Year's should.
Esther: sounds a little scary
Maude: It was and definitely chaotic but very fun too.
Lizzi: True! Really thankful to still be breathing at that moment, right?
Wow! Cool!
Maude: Very memorable!
Okay, what do you two think of New Year's resolutions?
Esther: Not typically a fan
for a few reasons 1. why should new years be the only time to decide to make a positive change?
2. Many times people make their "resolutions" to hard to tackle
"I am going to lose 100 lbs in 6weeks"
ect
I think that resolutions have their place but realizing that a life change is the better route
but with all that said I kinda made a resolution this year! hahaha
Esther: I want to have some key, basic recipes that are to be my staples and write them down and actually put them in some kind of book
I wanted to say I wouldn't make the same meal twice but my husband said that may be a little crazy
(unrealistic resolutions and all that)
Lizzi: It's a fun idea, though! Very wonderful! Well, and I think the reason that people specifically make them at the New Year is because it represents a clean slate, you know?
Esther: instead I decided to resolve to make a bit of my own recipe staples "book"
Lizzi: That's wonderful!!!
My sister, the next Julia Child! Awesome!
Esther: I think resolutions can be a great way to "start afresh" sometimes I think people go a little crazy about it
rather than just take little steps, ya know?
Lizzi: Very true
Maude: That's a good idea, Es! And I"m with your husband because once you find a meal you love you should be able to have it again soon, you know?
Esther: I don't know about that Liz!
True, true
Lizzi: Yeah, I don't have a strong opinion about resolutions either way.
I think that the reasoning behind them is typically like I mentioned above, but I agree that it can get out of hand sometimes
Maude: I also think people prefer resolutions at January 1st because it is an easy date to remember and count from. "I"ve been exercising every day for 3 months" or "I've flossed my teeth every night for 5 months and 2 days."
Lizzi: True
Maude: I agree that they have to be achievable but I think anytime is a good time to improve oneself - even New Years. And I think people do make positive changes throughout the year too but New Year's is good to re-commit to them - especially for dieters after holiday eating!!
Esther shared her resolution for this year but have you all made any in the past? Or any others you would want to share?
Lizzi: I don't think I've ever made any clear, definitive resolutions. Not any that I can remember anyway.
I mean, I might say that I 'd like to exercise more or something like that, but I don't think I've ever made clear goal, you know?
Maude: When I was 16 my New Years resolution was to have a boyfriend by the next year...
Teenaged girls!
Well, I did.
Lizzi: haha
Maude: But since then I've not really made one
Esther: haha
Maude: However, I really want to head toward being a published author.
Screenwriting is nice but I woul love to write books as well.
Lizzi: And you would are a wonderful writer already!
So hopefully getting published won't be too difficult!
Maude: Thanks. I'm not sure what the resolution is really - except to write more. To use my free time more wisely because I can't really control whether a publiher is interested or not...
Lizzi: Well, and writing more is definitely something you can control, so that's a great resolution!
Maude: We'll see.
Esther: I have made resolutions to work out more, eat better, eat less, ect. But none of those really stuck. In all my attempts of those "resolutions" my heart was not in the right place. I think a lot of my issues with New Year's resolutions are because in the past it has been something I have done as a selfish goal for myself rather than wanting to make life changes that glorify the Lord.
I think resolutions can be done well
I have just never done it before
Lizzi: Very good thought
Lizzi: and then it is more about our works, instead of allowing God to change our hearts and work through us
And work within His will!
Maude: Yes, I think to use the talents God has given you (cooking, writing, etc) and to act appropriately remembering our body is a temple - all good, positive changes to make - whenever we can!
