Maude: Okay, today I thought we would chat about movies
Lizzi: cool!
Esther: That sounds fun
Maude: The first question is: What movie has made an impact in your life?
Esther: hmm...
Well, I have always loved Life is Beautiful
I think that is a very impactful movie
Lizzi: I love that movie!
Esther: It is a tale of love and family. And in Italian which is just a beautiful language to listen to for an hour and a half
Esther: It is a tale of love and family. And in Italian which is just a beautiful language to listen to for an hour and a half
Maude: I watched Schindler's List when it first came out (I was pretty young) and that was very eye-opening. I had read a lot of books about World War 2 but to see it acted out was very powerful.
Lizzi: There are so many impactful and inspiring movies from the World War 2 era...
Esther: I agree Maude that is a very good movie too
Maude: That was such a time of evil and honor. Another WW2 film that I liked was Valkyrie. I love learning about the Germans who stood against Hitler.
Lizzi: There were many people that did incredible acts of good service and dangerous, bold courageous acts
There is one... I can't remember the title! About jewish brothers who established a community in the woods during world war 2
It was amazing!
Esther: Liz, I have heard of that movie but never seen it (can't think of the title either)
Maude: Defiance. That was good too Lizzi!
Although, Esther, I think I need to also mention Band of Brothers. I know you like that one
Esther: Liz, I have heard of that movie but never seen it (can't think of the title either)
Maude: Defiance. That was good too Lizzi!
Although, Esther, I think I need to also mention Band of Brothers. I know you like that one
Esther: I thought of Band of Brothers but I didn't think it would count!
Lizzi: Liev Shrieber and The new James Bond guy were in it
Esther: (it is not a movie you know...)
Maude: tv miniseries
Lizzi: I haven't seen that, but want to
Maude: but that can still be counted (I am the host this time, you know, so I can do that!)
Lizzi: Yes you can!
Maude: Band of Brothers is grueling to watch Liz but very powerful.
Lizzi: There are other impactful movies... just trying to think...
Esther: Well, than Band of Brother is definitely one of mine as well (glad we cleared that up)
Maude: There are a lot...
It's the true story of a doctor who separated twins who were joined at birth
Maude: I have never heard of that
Lizzi: And The Awakenings with Robert DeNiro
It is about a doctor who helped comatose people reawaken for a period of time
Maude: Interesting.
What genre is your favourite?
Lizzi: Usually drama based on true story
Esther: that is hard Maude
Maude: That is my least favourite, Lizzi!
Funny.
Esther: it depends on the day and the mood
Lizzi: You mean regarding impactful movies, or favorite genre overall?
Esther: I love a good comedy
Maude: Favourite genre overall
Esther: a good clean comedy
Maude: Have you got an example, Esther?
good clean comedies are hard to find sometimes
Esther: Like Psych! (I know it is a T.V. show!)
Princess Bride
Maude: I love The Princess Bride
Esther: Me too!
Lizzi: I guess I still like the drama based on real life, but also political thrillers, and classics
Romatic comedies are good, but they get old
Esther: Arsenic and Old Lace!
Lizzi: You know me... I can never just decide on one thing :/
Esther: Philadelphia Story
Lizzi: Yeah!
Esther: All my favorite movies are basically comedies so I guess that means my favorite type of movies are comedies too?
Lizzi: I guess so
Maude: My favourite is romantic comedy. They can get old after a while though, you are right, but then I just take time off watching movies!
I do like family comedy too and classics but romantic comedies are my favourite
Esther: I also like The Painted Veil which is fantastically depressing
It just depends on my mood
Lizzi: yeah
Maude: I am not a big fan of depressing films
or inspirational ones
Lizzi: That's funny!
Esther: Like While you were Sleeping?
Maude: (not inspirational as in Christian though - I like Christian films)
obviously!!
Esther: Best romantic comedy in my opinion
Maude: My favourite Romantic Comedy is Sweet Home Alabama
Lizzi: It is hard to find a hollywood movie that is not depressing nowadays
Maude: but While you were Sleeping is close behind
With Notting Hill
That is very true.
Esther: I like some suspenseful movies
Lizzi: Love Notting Hill
Maude: I think Hollywood is pretty cynical and narcissistic.
Lizzi: They are all quirky and depressing and dysfunctional
Esther: I like The Village
Esther: I like The Village
Lizzi: Yeah
Esther: and that other movie by him with the kid?
Lizzi: The Sixth Sense?
Esther: and that other movie by him with the kid?
Lizzi: The Sixth Sense?
Esther: YES! that is it
Maude: I know. The family Christmas films all have a VERY messed up family getting together
Is that how all the people in Hollywood's families are? Or do they think ours are like that?
It is weird
Lizzi: I know!
Maude: M. Night Sham....?
Esther: right, him
Lizzi: I hate that they are always pushing these strange movies that no one will like
Maude: I like some of his but I prefer a truer suspense not the suspense shot like a horror
Esther: Some people must like them
Maude: I like The Usual Suspects
Esther: I have never seen that
Maude: The only M. Night one I liked was Unbreakable
Esther: I hate that movie
Maude: It was more of a superhero one than a faux-horror
You should watch The Usual Suspects, Es, it is a classic!
But it is action/suspense and has some violence
so be forewarned
Esther: okay. I'll check it out
as long as it is not horror violence I don't think I'll mind
as long as it is not horror violence I don't think I'll mind
Maude: Not horror at all
All right, ready for the next question?
Esther: Yes I am ready for the next question
Maude: What film(s) do you watch over and over?
For me? Pride & Prejudice
Esther: hmm...
Maude: You can also mention television shows you have on DVD that you rewatch.
Like Jeeves & Wooster for me!
Esther: Clue. Arsenic and Old Lace
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Maude: Pride & Prejudice the A&E version with Colin Firth of course!!! (Not the Keira Knightly version, ugg!)
Esther: Sandlot
Maude: Oscar
Esther: I love Oscar!
Maude: Oohh Sandlot. I love that movie!
Esther: I don't own Oscar.
Maude: I know. Sorry
Esther: While You Were Sleeping
Maude: Yes, but I don't like it as well once he wakes up
Lizzi: We always watch Just Friends
Maude: From there I like the movie so much less - I don't know why
Lizzi: because that is a rom com that my husband thinks is hilarious
Maude: Is Just Friends good? I thought it had bad parts?
Esther: If I am at home [at Mom's] I would be watching Picture Perfect or Psych with Mom (about the only thing she'll watch)
Lizzi: and Along Came Polly
Maude: I've never seen it
Lizzi: Yeah, Just Friends does have some bad parts
Maude: Stinky.
Lizzi: yeah
but they are both funny too
I would watch jimmy stewart classics over and over
Esther: Philadelphia Story (my favorite movie)
Lizzi: yeah!
Maude: White Christmas (we watch it all year long!)
Parent Trap
Esther: good movie!
Maude: Parent Trap 1 3 and 4!!
Esther: *smile*
Maude: Not 2 though... That one is not so good...
Lizzi: Adventures in Babysitting (thanks, Esther!)
Esther: Newsies! I could watch that movie again and again
Maude: Both very good movies
I wish I had Newsies
Esther: you're welcome
Maude: I haven't seen that in years!
(thanks about what?)
Esther: I stole Leah's...
Maude: Nice... Esther
She may read this post you know
Lizzi: Esther sent it to me!
Esther: I sent her Adventures in Babysitting
Maude: She'll steal it back!
Esther: yeah...
Maude: That is nice, Esther. I wanted to send you Oscar but now I can't find it... Sorry
Esther: *smile*
you should keep looking
just joking!
Maude: Next question:
What film would you recommend to people to improve their lives/think over personal issues?
I always recommend The Story of Us
with Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer - it is great for looking at your marriage
Lizzi: I just thought of that!
Esther: that is such a good movie!
Lizzi: yeah
Maude: I think I recommended it to both of you all right?
Esther: I have been telling Andrew we need to watch that together but I can never find it!
Lizzi: yep
Esther: I have seen it with you
Lizzi: hard to watch sometimes but good
Esther: a very long, long time ago
I think you were in your old, old D.C. apartment
the one like in the city where you walked to church, maybe?
Maude: You can borrow it if you like
Yeah the apartment in downtown DC. That would have been in 2004
Any others?
Esther: we'll have to. OR we can all watch it togeher when we come visit
WOW that was a long time ago
Maude: Sounds perfect
Esther: well, I would really suggest the book...
Maude: Book??!!!
Maude: Book??!!!
Lizzi: The Passion of the Christ
Esther: But, if they're not readers The Kite Runner
Maude: Oh good. You were about to get in big trouble, Esther!!
Esther: It is very thought provoking
and looks into the decisions we make can affect us all through life
Maude: I've yet to see The Passion of the Christ
Esther: uh-oh I don't like being in trouble
Maude: That sounds interesting, Esther
What about a film that reminds you of growing up in a house full of 9 other siblings?
Esther: Yours, Mine and Ours!
Lizzi: favorite!
Esther: and Cheaper by the Dozen
Maude: I just watched the recent version of Yours, Mine, and Ours last Saturday for the first time and did think of us - they even had a pig!
But I think Cheaper by the Dozen was more like our house was
Esther: I agree!
Maude: Probably because Yours, Mine, and Ours deals so much with blending two families which we never had to do
But yes, both of those are fun to watch!!
Lizzi: those are so good
Esther: So funny too
Maude: Any films that remind you of your sisters?
Esther: hmm...
Lizzi: I can't think...
Maude: I couldn't think of any either
Esther: Are there many movies about sisters?
Maude: I think because, like we said, most Hollywood films have so many issues going on within the family..
Lizzi: not really, huh?
Maude: Any films about sisters their relationship is pretty messed up
Lizzi: yeah in most movies they deal withfriends, not family
Maude: I just thought you all might know one
Okay moving on..
Last question: What are some "classic" O'Brien movie quotes (the quotes we use all the time). Give the quote and the film they come from please.

Lizzi: *smile*

Maude: I know. I really want to watch Clue now!!
Esther: I think I am going to have to watch Clue now...
Maude: Clue is the best for quotes I think!
Lizzi: yeah
Esther: Yes!
Maude: Any other quotes just burning to come out, ladies?
Lizzi: Not any from me
Maude: You can definitely tell our favourite movies to quote!
Well, I have to add Lizzi's favourite line from Clue - "I am going to go home and sleep with my wife!"
Esther: Honestly I am impressed how many came sliding out! Usually they just come in conversation by something that prompts that
Lizzi: Yeah!!
Maude: True - these were the best of the best
Esther: indeed!
Lizzi: Thanks, Maude
Esther: this was fun!
Maude: All right. Well it will be like we are all together later tonight as we sit in our homes across the country eating ice cream (as all good O'Briens would!) and watching Clue!
Lizzi: Yes!
Esther: that is SO true
