Sisters Chat about Valentine's Day!

Lizzi: Today I wanted to talk about Valentine's Day. I know by the time we post this it will be over, but I still wanted to use it for a topic!
Valentine's Day was always special in our house growing up. What type of things do you remember doing?
Maude: Esther posted about this, but the Secret Someone thing was a favourite
Esther: I LOVED that
Lizzi: That was fun! I also think it was really special that mom always made a heart-shaped chocolate chip cookie for each of us
Esther: It was so fun. Mom did a good job making it special.
Maude: It was fun because you had to do something every day. Whether a gift or doing one of their chores for them. Very fun, and it taught good lessons.
Lizzi: They were huge! Had to be a big expense and a lot of work for her
Maude: I loved the chocolate chip cookies. When we first got married and mine NEVER looked like hearts!
Lizzi: She also would post Valentine's poems
Esther: I can never get my chocolate chip cookies to taste like hers either. Hers are the best!
Lizzi: And decorate in such a fun way
Esther: And put hearts on the cupboards
Lizzi: Yep! Mom made it better than any preschool teacher could ever imagine... We had it so good.
Maude: I am not good about decorating
Esther: I know! I just realized I don't have one heart up!
Maude: Me neither!
Lizzi: Do you do anything special with your kids now for Valentine's Day?
Esther: Umm... not really. I was just thinking tomorrow we may "attempt" to make a Valentine for Daddy with lots of scribbles and ripped up paper
Maude: They each made valentines for special people. We made Valentine's cupcakes together. I made a large Valentine for them to hang on their walls the rest of the year so they remember how much I love them every time they see it.
Esther: Aw!
Lizzi: Bug is still pretty young! You've got lots of years to perfect those traditions.
Esther: That is true, I just want to start traditions rather than not have any.
Lizzi: I love the way that Mom made it special for all of us and want to share that as a family. We are starting to do things like make valentines and cookies together. And decorate! Our windows are all love-y, too! haha
Esther: That's so fun!
Lizzi: What about with your spouses? Do you do anything particular or does it change from year to year?
Maude: We usually have a "date" at home after the kids go to bed. That means nice cheese and crackers, exchange cards and gifts, and then we watch a movie or read a book together or play a game or something.
Lizzi: That's nice!
Esther: We don't usually do much on Valentines Day. Well, aside from me making heart shaped pancakes, and some type of yummy dessert (it strawberry cake this year!)
Maude: Probably a dessert too.
Esther: We usually do something on Feb 16th since that is the day we got engaged
Lizzi: That's cool, too, Essie! See, traditions are starting! That's an even better idea.
Esther: It works out since it is so close to Valentines day we kinda squish them together.
Maude: That is fun
Esther: We will be going out on a date for the 16th
Maude: We've never celebrated when we got engaged! We always celebrate when we started dating but that would be fun too!
Lizzi: I don't even remember the date that we got engaged... ! I probably have it written somewhere
Maude: November 7th
Esther: Really? That is the anniversary we always celebrate, mainly because we have never been together on our wedding anniversary. Plus! I love any excuse to celebrate. Ours is easy to remember since it is so close to Valentine's Day
Maude: We do too! Just never thought about Engagement Day for some reason...
Lizzi: He likes to surprise me for Valentine's Day, even if it's just a little something special, so that's perfect. I love surprises. :) This year, he stopped at THREE different places on the way home to get items that he knew I liked. That's what I love about marriage, and about my husband. He knows me so well. He knew that I'd prefer Cheesecake Factory cheesecake to roses and so he selflessly battled traffic to get them. Sure makes a girl feel wonderful! ;)
Maude: I prefer chocolates - anytime!!! Including Valentines. I don't care either way about the flowers but chocolates are a MUST!
Esther: Yeah, my man prefers to surprise me and we tend to not do much for Valentine's Day (even though he may "surprise" me this year) I love my flowers AND my chocolates (man I must be a demanding women)
Maude: We were not together for Valentine's this year.
Esther: I think on Thur we may go out for drinking chocolate!
Lizzi: Yummy! You were not be together, Maude?
Maude: So, my present was for him to surprise me the weekend before when he drove 5 hours both ways just to see us for less than 2 days. It was wonderfully sweet!
Esther: That is so sweet!
Lizzi: That is very sweet and sacrificial. Exactly what love should be!
Maude: Friday night to Sunday directly from church. It was really nice and a sweet surprise
I agree! Better than chocolates!
Lizzi: Yep! I guess that's my thought... Sometimes our expectations are detrimental to a true celebration and appreciation of love.
BUT chocolates and flowers are still nice! Haha! I love this holiday because of the celebration of love. I know it can be commercialized, but I love all the hearts, and the cute decorations and the valentines.
Anything important you want to instill in your kids about this "Love Holiday"?
Maude: I was thinking the other day that so many of our celebrations celebrate death and sacrifice
Veterans, July 4th, etc. Valentine's is nice. I want to do Secret Someones when they get older. Something where they need to show love to each other.
Esther: I think what you said is right about Valentine's being a "celebration of love" that is how I think of it. Love is something to celebrate!
Lizzi: And something for everyone. It's not just for "lovers"!
Maude: But needs to be celebrated by "lovers" too! But there are a lot more people that I love than jut my husband!
Esther: I agree, Maude. I would love for my children to have something like "secret someone". Celebrate the love of family, friends, and lovers too!
Lizzi: Yeah, I want to celebrate with my kids so they know how much we love them, how to love each other, and most importantly, about the perfect love of God.
Esther: And of course to celebrate our God of love who makes it possible to love at all.
Lizzi: What a wonderful holiday to teach them about the perfect love of God, Of which NOTHING can separate us (Romans 8:35-39). AMAZING!
