Maude: I thought we'd talk this week about Thanksgiving (since it was yesterday!)
Esther: cool beans
Maude: First, what do you normally have for Thanksgiving dinner?
turkey, obviously
Lizzi: Cranberry sauce!
Maude: yuck, Liz.
Lizzi: :)
Esther: mashed potatoes!!
Maude: Real stuffing (not the stuff from the box)!!
yummy
Esther: I love stuffing
Lizzi: I don't like green bean casserole, Maude, so I guess we're even
Maude: Hmm, green bean casserole!
Esther: and mashed potatoes
Maude: You're weird, Lizzi.
Lizzi: Yeah, stuffing!
Esther: cannot decide which I love more
Lizzi: Me too
(to Esther)
Esther: corn casserole too
Maude: Stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy - I'm with you girls - that is a tough call!
Lizzi: Pumpkin anything!
Maude: I think our Thanksgivings are pretty traditional then
Lizzi: And cranberry salad, just because Mom always makes it
Maude: don't you think?
Rolls, usually homemade
I think Katharine usually makes them, right?
Esther: yep
Maude: What is your favourite Thanksgiving dessert?
Esther: Her rolls are good too
umm...
cheesecake? Do we do cheesecake for Thanksgiving?
I think we did last year...
Lizzi: Cheesecake is the best anytime!
Esther: If so it is definitely cheesecake
Maude: We often do chocolate chip cheesecake since so many of us don't like pumpkin pie
Lizzi: I do love pumpkin cheesecake
Esther: yes pumpkin cheesecake!
Lizzi: But I also like pumpkin pie
Just let my husband eat the crust
Esther: me too. not my favorite though
Maude: Pumpkin cheesecake? That's gross...
Esther: no, it's really good
Maude: The only pie I like is apple
What is your favourite way to eat leftover turkey?
Esther: cold. on a sandwich
with mayo and spinach
Lizzi: me too!
Well, I also add cheese and cucumber and tomato
Maude: Yeah, I don't really like turkey the first time so... I guess with barbecue sauce in a pulled turkey BBQ sort of sandwich.
Lizzi: We also make porridge out of it
Maude: Turkey porridge?
Lizzi: Yeah
Maude: I was actually wondering the other day if anyone made porridge any more (we were reading The Three Bears) and what the difference is between porridge and oatmeal?
Lizzi: Well, at least how we make it (also called congee) it is more savory
made with rice
Maude: I was hoping to find a little old lady to ask - didn't think one of my sisters would know!!!
Lizzi: Cooked for a long time
haha
Maude: Cool.
So it is the Asian version of porridge?
Lizzi: and you add whatever meat for flavor and if you want veggies in it too
Maude: Or is rice the regular way?
Lizzi: I don't know about that
We should google it! haha
Maude: I never thought about vegetables in porridge before!
Cool.
Lizzi: Yeah, we usually chop up spinach or shred carrots
so they are very small
I don't know that it always has veggies but I figure it's always better to have them, ya know?
Maude: Yep. Neat, thanks Liz!
Esther: I remember you guys making porridge before SO yummy
Lizzi: Thanks!
Maude: Next question. What are some Thanksgiving traditions that you/we have?
Esther: I really like how Mom always has us go around and say what we are thankful for
I want to do that with my family too
Lizzi: I think it's important to remember the history of Thanksgiving
The real story of how it began
Maude: I agree.
Esther: One thing I have started to do is looking up and read verses on Thankfulness and being thankful in the month of Nov. I was really wanting to memorize some but haven't done that yet
Lizzi: That's great!
Esther: I would really like to do that in the future.
Maude: "Give Thanks to he Lord for He is good." 1 Chronicles 16:34
Lizzi: It is such a wonderful time to have a clear focus on the blessings we have received from God
Maude: That was my son's first memory verse last November
Esther: That's awesome Maude
Maude: What Thanksgiving memories do you have?
My biggest one was the play I wrote and directed that I made all you younger siblings be in
Lizzi: That was fun!
I always loved watching the parade in the morning. Still would, if we had cable!
Maude: there were costumes, set changes, props. We rehearsed for about 2 weeks I think!!
Crazy to get little kids to do that.
Lizzi: Yeah!
Maude: I'm trying to think how old we were...
Lizzi: I don't know
Maude: Pretty young though.
Lizzi: I always liked going to our Aunt's house in the evening
and sometimes the drive home was really snowy and scary!
Esther: I remember wanting to stuff the turkey (always my favorite job) and being really sad when Mom said she was going to have to wake up around 4am to do it and didn't not think I would want to get up that early to do it. I assured I would like to wake up that early! So, she woke me up and I stuffed that turkey at 4am
Maude: I always liked watching the parade too. We used to get the tv out of the closet for that growing up.
Lizzi: Esther, that is awesome! You were always mom's best helper in the kitchen
Maude: You are crazy, Esther!! Ever thought of becoming a chef?
Esther: It is secret dream of mine
probably just for my fam :)
Maude: Not so secret, little girl. You just wrote a post on beets!!
Esther: true
:)
Maude: I can see you running your own cute, charming little restaurant one day.
Everyone would love it!
Esther: that was really fun. Good topic Maude
Maude: Not a hard one to pick this week!!
