Memory Monday - Sister Cousins

Growing up, Katharine, Lizzi and I loved hanging out with our cousins close in age, Sara and Rachel.  Esther loved hanging out with their little sister, Abbi.  As we got older we all spent more time together, both us older girls and the younger ones.

L ro R: Katharine, Rachel, Maude, Lizzi and Sara about 13 years ago.
They used to live beside a golf course and we would play out there all night.  I remember being at their house when Princess Diana died and how Sara loved Seal.  We played barbies for hours when we were younger and went to football games with them when we were older.  Their father was the first person to let me drive on a real road when I got my permit!!  (It was terrifying for me and probably everyone else in the car but my uncle was so calm and encouraging!)

There was something special about our relationships.  We all got along extremely well and had a fantastic time but I think what we liked best about each other was how close we all were to our sisters.  So many of my friends didn't have or weren't as close to their sisters but we could relate so well to eath other on that level especially.  I don't remember any of us ever fighting (although there were times of excluding one another!) but each of us knew that although we were close and loved each other dearly sisters were always ahead of cousins if it came down to it.

Several years ago we all attended our grandmother's funeral and, although time had changed each of us, that friendship was still there and we were able to pick right back up from when we were kids.  We have common blood, common family heritage, and common childhood experiences.  If they ever needed something we would do whatever we could to help - they are family.

Years have past and we are spread all over the country.  None of these special cousins live in any of the states that any of us girls live in.  We don't get together every year like we promised we would growing up.  But the coolest thing I think, is that although us cousins aren't as close as we used to be both groups of sisters are.  The Sisters O'Brien are still extremely close and so are they.  I love that!
