A Birthday Celebration

Today my little boy turned three years old. It has gone by so fast, these three years. Unfortunately, as I sit here tonight, I feel like I spent the whole day in the kitchen and not much of it with him. When he woke up, he helped me make his own birthday sign (by his own wishes) and later in the morning we made a birthday medallion/necklace complete with cheerios and stickers. But I was a little grumpy. He and I were both fighting an obscure stomach bug, and I was tired and impatient. Oh, dear! What a way for a birthday to begin!

He is now wanting to "help" at every moment in the kitchen. With the dishes, with the mixing, with the sweeping. It's so funny because I remember being at that stage as a kid and now I see it from my Mom's perspective! How do you balance accepting your kid's offered assistance, and distracting them so that you can really get the job done? It's so hard, and so difficult to maintain patience and peace as you are trying to hurry through the tasks. I hope that I included him enough in the jobs today and that I didn't push him away too fast.

He couldn't wait to eat his cupcake tonight and then when the moment arrived, he didn't eat much of it. He hasn't been eating much at all these past few days. Stomach bug. (We should get an answer at his check-up tomorrow.) But he was very excited about his new wooden train set and sat on the floor with Daddy to begin playing right after dinner.

I guess I need to keep in mind that while these days are very important and special to celebrate, they are also days just like any other. I can't help sickness and there are times when I will be busy with other things and won't be able to read or snuggle as much. But, I also hope I remember to take a deep breath, and place the priorities where they need to be. I hope I will be patient, gentle, and kind. Maybe I need to spend extra time in prayer during birthday preparations next time. :) Oh, how blessed I am by this precious little boy! I am so thankful for my gift, God.
