I've moved around 20 times in my adult life so I feel that, on this subject at least, I am something of an expert. I wanted to share some moving tips I've found over the years:
* Put all your cleaning supplies in a box that is left open and isn't packed until last. Use your cleaning supplies to clean your apartment before you leave and your new place before you move in. Always include at least one roll of toilet paper, some handwash and a towel (or paper towels) in the cleaning supplies box.
* Pack decorations and all unneccessary items early in the packing process.
* Plan your meals meticulously and pack all unneeded kitchenware as soon as you are down to a manageable number of meals (two or three days or so).
* Pack all your clothes, towels, blankets, and other soft items in garbage bags. They can be stuck in holes in the packed truck or packed around furniture for padding. Never rip the garbage bags when you are unpacking so you can use the bags for the trash at your new place.
Of course, now that we've moved so much we don't follow all of our own tips or what most people would consider practical for moving. We usually don't get started unil 2 or 3 days before moving day (we've done less!) and we aren't as careful either packing boxes or the truck about trying to keep our things from breaking for two reasons. First, we know what most of our dishes and furniture can handle (we've only broken two plates and a few knick knacks in all those moves) and, second, if it breaks we won't have to move it next time!
