Each Friday we will post a blog entry of the four of us talking about different things. We hope you enjoy getting to know us and see us interacting here.
Maude: Let's start with a Sister Line-up,
in age order introducing ourselves.
I am Maude. The oldest of these lovely sisters.
I have a wonderful husband of 10 years and two children (3 and 1).
Katharine: I am Katharine the second oldest.
I have been married 9 months and, so far , have no children
Lizzi: Anything to tell us?
Katharine: nope
haha
Maude: Mom would kill us if we found out on a blog before she did!
Katharine: well, you didn't find out anything!
Lizzi: That would be so funny! (Not to be killed, of course...)
Maude: Your turn Lizzi
Lizzi: Okay. My name is Lizzi. I have been married for 8 years to a very awesome man and have two boys (2 and 6 months)
Esther: I am Esther. The baby sister of our very large family (Mom had 10 children).
I am married to a very wonderful man and we are blessed to have a little 10-month old boy.
(well maybe not "little" he tends to be the 90th percentile)
Lizzi: They grow like that in our family
Katharine: hahaha!!
Esther: The boys at least
Maude: Let's share a little bit about our family - the O'Briens.
Katharine: there are 10 kids!
oops, I guess Es said that already...
Esther: 6 girls and 4 boys
Katharine: We are the coolest ones, of course
Maude: Everyone always asks what it was like growing up with so many siblings - I always say it was like one big slumber party!
Lizzi: We are all grown up now, but when we were kids it was a fun, crazy household.
Katharine: It is definitely the best!
I can't imagine having a smaller family...
Esther: Always loud... it was like living in a musical. we love music and singing
Lizzi: And of the 4 of us, Maude was definitely the one in charge.
Writing and directing plays...
Maude: And general bossing around too, right?
Lizzi: Mmm Hmm
Katharine: Obviously, Maude is still the one in charge!!!
Lizzi: haha
Maude: Watch it girls...
Katharine: She's good at being bossy, ahem - I mean, directing our silliness
Lizzi: Yeah, the 4 of us all love singing, acting, music
Esther: you are just the oldest of us 4
Maude: {;O)
Esther: you are allowed to be a little bossy
Maude: Thank you Esther! I am not the oldest of the ten, however, so I do have middle child tendencies as well!
Esther: I am not the baby but I do tend to have baby child tendencies...
Katharine: I guess we all should, since us four are all middle children
That's true, Esther but it's probably because you're the baby girl!
Maude: Perhaps we should give our number in the overall line-up. From oldest to youngest. I am the 4th.
Katharine: 5th!
Lizzi: 6th!
Esther: 8th! (best spot to be)
Maude: We have a brother between Lizzi and Esther.
Lizzi: He's not allowed to join because he's not a GIRL
Katharine: And not nearly as cool as us!
Maude: I also thought it would be fun to share, since we are from a large family, what our preferred number of children would be. This is just you not you and your husband - just how many kids you personally think sounds good.
Lizzi: Okay, you start.
Katharine: who Maude? I'd like 5 or 6, so does my man!
Esther: umm... we are taking it one child at a time. Some days I think 8 sounds great, some days I think stopping at one sounds wisest!
I think I would like 4-7
Maude: We're thinking of 5 but since we're potty-training right now I'm thinking 2 is just fine!!!
Katharine: haha, you should use cloth diapers!
I'm going to have to post on that one...
Maude: Potty-training IS using cloth diapers!
Katharine: hahahahahah!!!!
Lizzi: It's funny because the longer I'm married the more I see the importance of a number under the umbrella of my husband, so while I'm not sure what it will be, and God is sovereign, I think maybe 3 or 4? Haha...long answer, sorry.
Katharine: our husbands definitely have a part in baby-making!!
Esther: for shoor!
Katharine: Maude is probably MORTIFIED that I just typed that out!
Lizzi: Haha
Esther: It's the truth
Maude: Of course our husbands' desires are very important but none of them have as many siblings. I just wanted to see if anyone was like - no more than two!! That would say something about our experience growing up!
Lizzi: Very true!
Maude: I completely ignored you Katharine!!
Katharine: I'm used to it...
lol!
Esther: I could tell you did
Maude: I don't know why you can't fill out the stork's paperwork by yourself...
Katharine: haha!
Lizzi: You make Maude laugh, Maude.
Maude: But it is nice to have their input on preferences.
Moving along...
Katharine: Wait!
We forgot to say that we have a mom who is a SAINT!!!
Esther: uh-oh
Lizzi: True Dat
Katharine: raising 10 kids, amazing!
Maude: Notice none of us said we wanted ten... she is an incredible woman!
Lizzi: Especilly that #5...
Katharine: hey!
I was an angel, still am!!
Esther: I truly don't know how she did it! Being a Mom helps me appreciate her all the more
Lizzi: Me too
Maude: Definitely. Now...
What are some favourite memories growing up in such a big family?
Esther: CHRISTMAS!
Katharine: huge trees, tons of decorations
Esther: The wrapping paper EVERYWHERE
Katharine: yummy homemade treats
Lizzi: The stockings lined up at the mantle
Katharine: and mom's cinnamon rolls - outta this world!
Esther: Mom is the best Christmas decorator
Katharine: Definitely!!
Maude: I loved staying up the night before to help get everything ready for the little kids.
Lizzi: Carolling together
Katharine: wrapping all the gifts together
reading the story of Jesus' birth
singing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus with a cake mom made
Lizzi: Th story of the Three Trees!
Katharine: yay, I love that one!
Lizzi: Shepherd's pie!
Katharine: poor Paul
Maude: Someone explain Paul's complaint.
Katharine: I'm mean
or was, as a kid at least
Lizzi: Poor Paul would always want Shepherd's Pie for his birthday (Dec 23rd) but couldn't because SOMEONE insisted it was only for Christmas eve.
Maude: Paul thought we should just have it both nights
Esther: (cough cough) Katharine
Katharine: I need to tell my husband that story, help him understand me
Esther: A little bossy, perhaps?
Maude: It was fun to unwrap the gifts one at a time. It would take hours in the morning.
Katharine: Jello Jigglers for Esther
Esther: Yay! for my jello jigglers
Katharine: I need to tell my husband that story, help him understand me
Esther: love you
Katharine: I love you too. even if you just called me bossy!
Maude: Christmas was wonderful. Other memories?
Esther: singing hymns in the morning for homeschooling
Lizzi: Yeah!
Katharine: Onward Christian Soldiers!
Maude: Marching around the table
Katharine: haha
Lizzi: That just made me giggle right now
Katharine: love it!
Maude: It was a patriotic song, which one?
Lizzi: You always picked it!
The "Our god is marching on" one
Maude: I know - I can't think..
Lizzi: oops. big G
Katharine: that's it!
Esther: I always picked (Holy, Holy, Holy)
Maude: Glory, glory hallelujah
Battle Hymn of the Republic
(I asked my husband!!)
Lizzi: :)
Maude: Homeschooling was awesome
Katharine: was that a disclaimer?
it was!
Maude: No, the rightful credit!
Katharine: :)
Maude: What about Family Camp?
Lizzi: How about Family Week?
haha
Katharine: I was JUST going to say that!!
Maude: Maybe that should be its own blog
Katharine: great minds...
Esther: That is just going to make me sad...
no more family week
Maude: Since it is controversial now...
Katharine: well, it was wonderful going there every year!
Maude: Let's save it and we can rant about the current state as well share Maudemories
Lizzi: ok
Katharine: seeing old friends, playing in the gym, paddle-boating
Vesper hill, chapel services
Esther: Vespers hill
Lizzi: haha... Maude just said to save it for another week
Maude: It is its own subject, I think!
Katharine: oops, I read that but I guess it didn't process, sorry!
Esther: I agree
Lizzi: How about preparing for Heritage servics?
Katharine: oh my!
Lizzi: setting up chairs
Katharine: moving the table into the living room to make room for all the chairs
Esther: Don't really remember too well
Maude: What a great time - having a church start meet in our own home!
Maude: We had the pulpit sitting in the living room the rest of the week!
Katharine: what about walking the path to our wonderful neighbors' home to ice skate in the winter, swim in the summer or whatever else?
Lizzi: How about singing together?
Maude: Explain that Liz.
Lizzi: Singing? There were times when the four of us sang together
Plus one of our older sisters
Maude: For performance
Lizzi: We sang for church, camp, fair, funerals, weddings, ha ha
Esther: The O'Brien sisters singing
Lizzi: Yep
Esther: miss that
Katharine: what about just singing at home? lol
Lizzi: That too!
Esther: All the time
Katharine: chaos - as we all sang different songs - loudly!!
Lizzi: The poor boys
Katharine: poor mom
Maude: Remember singing for one of our sister's boyfriends? The entire show of Joseph?
Lizzi: Don't know if Esther did that
but yeah, I remember!
Katharine: that was AWESOME!!
Esther: Nope
Katharine: he listened the whole time
Esther: I was little
Lizzi: : )
Esther: bless his heart
Maude: Poor guy
Katharine: he's a good man
Maude: We need to wrap it up
Katharine: okay
Maude: Any last words ladies?
Lizzi: I am thankful for my beautiful sisters
Katharine: I'm excited to do a blog with you all!!
Esther: Yeah, I kind of have a fussy baby.
Me too!
Lizzi: (and brothers, too!)
Maude: We hope you enjoy getting to know us on our blog!
Esther: we should try and put up some pictures of us together
Lizzi: We are excited to let you in to our little world!
